Zen Weekend with Sensei Jose Shinzan Palma
October 27, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - October 29, 2017 @ 12:00 pm
This program will be led by Sensei Jose Shinzan Palma, an internationally known teacher ordained at Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, who currently teaches in San Diego, National City and Carlsbad, California. He also co-teaches teen retreats for IBME and is a guest teacher at Upaya Zen Center, Einin-ji in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, and here at High Meadow Farm. This is the third year that Shinzan has come to High Meadow Farm to lead a fall retreat.
A retreat is a period of time where we come together as a sangha (community or group) to practice zazen (silent Zen meditation), giving us the opportunity to cultivate our practice in a supportive environment. Retreats are a cornerstone of Zen practice for which there is no substitute. They are essential for any practitioner who hopes to gain insight into their true nature. It is a period of time in which we drop down and engage in our practice, observing “Noble Silence” together.
During the retreat we will do sitting (zazen) and walking (kinhin) meditation, liturgy, Dharma talks, and have the opportunity for personal interviews with the teacher. We will share our meals and there will be opportunities for rest and walking the land. Meditation instruction will be available for those who are new to practice.
Registration is available for residential or commuter participants on a sliding scale based on affordability. Dana (voluntary contributions) for Sensei is in addition. The formal program begins on Friday, October 27th at 7:00pm. Participation limited to 20 in total. Vegetarian meals will be provided; if you have special dietary needs, please plan accordingly; we have refrigerator space for your use as needed.
