Timber Framing Workshop
October 6, 2017 @ 9:00 am - October 8, 2017 @ 5:00 pm
Learn basic timber framing techniques including layout and markup, mortise and tenon joinery, and barn raising. We will employ the square rule method which came into use in America around 1800. In this hands-on workshop we will build a small timber frame for a 12×16 foot hermitage and contemplative space for High Meadow Farm using basic hand tools. Meals will be provided. Free time in the evenings (or whenever you need a break!) for swimming, walking, or a quick nap in the hammock.
Roy Russell, who will lead the workshop, is an entrepreneur and amateur timber framer. His past projects include a four-foot square outhouse, a 24×24 foot two-story house, and a few things in between. (See a collection of his work here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94277872@N00/.) He was introduced to timber framing by a pair of structural engineers turned timber framers about 10 years ago. He is a member of the Timber Framer’s Guild and has worked on a number of their community projects.
The workshop will begin at 9am on Friday, October 6th and conclude on Sunday, October 8th at 5pm. Those coming from a distance and wishing to stay at High Meadow Farm are welcome to come after dinner on Thursday. Meals will be provided. The fee will be a need-based sliding scale.
